The first test in this series went nearly exactly to type. New Zealand did well to restrict India to 315. As expected, Jadeja and Ashwin added valuable runs and they proved decisive in giving India a first innings lead with the tourists losing their last five wickets for seven runs - Ashwin 5/73 and Jadeja 4/93 were lethal, as they so often are at home.
While, once again, none of the Indian batsmen made centuries, they dominated the third and fourth days, putting up 5/377 in good time and leaving Ashwin 6/132 ample overs to win with half a day to spare. New Zealand's batsmen failed to score a ton either, though Williamson made 75 in the first innings, and Ronchi 80 and Santner 71 both made fifties in the second. There was no sustained partnerships though and with Williamson absent from the second Test the short batting lineup and mismatched abilities to produce and play spin will likely lead to a very similar result.
